Acknowledgements: The authors gratefully acknowledge the support of the European Community given under MAST 2 contract CT92–0015. 2 classification of phytoplankton. The use of the Gabor function in calculating the local orientation is described and then tested on two images. The results show that this method of segmentation may be used to remove much of the clutter and noise that is present in the biological images. Finally a discussion of further work concludes this paper.
